Raven has been teaching at Open Door Yoga since 2005. She is a graduate of the 200hr Open Door Yoga Teacher Training Program and has also completed teacher training in Ashtanga, Yin and Restorative Yoga. She has been practicing since 1999 and she believes there is no end to the depth of yoga as she continuously learns and discovers new realms in her practice and teaching.
My class is Trans, Queer and Non-Binary inclusive. I teach in a flow orientated style, meaning I move through one posture to the next not rapidly but flow like focusing on the breath and bhandas. Think Ashtanga light! Ashtanga was my introduction to yoga and remains as the system most near and dear to my heart. I have practiced Bikram’s, Sivananda, Kundalini, Yin and Restorative Yoga. In India I learned of the important connection between Hinduism and yoga and while I hold a deep respect for this connection I make no attempt to amalgamate such sacredness into my teaching as I have had no appropriate instruction or cultural experience with it. I endeavour to be very clear with my directions and my demonstrations, providing modifications for all the poses.
Within the flow like structure of my class I incorporate the practice of holding postures. This serves to; cultivate mindfulness, help us learn to breathe through any anxieties that may arise and improve overall body strength. I believe that what we experience on the mat, will, through continuous practice transcend into daily life.
What you can expect from my classes: Appropriate breathing, stretching it out, releasing, strength building, growth, relaxation, and a non-intimidating atmosphere!
Often Tucker my registered service canine will be by my side. He is very gentle and knows to stay on his mat throughout the practice. Although he is very open to love and affection before and after class!
I play contemporary music during the class that has been selected to go with the flow of postures!
