Mindful Parenting Workshop
Saturday, Oct 5, 2019Time: 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Location: Commercial Drive
Description: This workshop is an introduction to the ‘Mindful Parenting’ course. This workshop aims to give parents an insight into what mindful parenting is as well as different coping mechanisms they can introduce into their home when feeling overwhelmed. There will be short meditation practices given for parents to practice by themselves and meditations to do with children too (all ages).
This Mindful Parenting course was created to help bring a sense of calmness to parents who lead stressful and busy lives. It is a recent adaptation of the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) programme. The course includes mindful practices and theory and aims to help parents understand the impact of the parent-child relationship on the development of the child. There is a strong emphasis on parental self-care, and the meditation practices taught are short to reflect the busy nature of parenting.
Through the practice of mindful parenting, parents can develop the capacity to be less reactive and more responsive in communications with their children. This course will give parents coping mechanisms for when they find themselves in stressful situations. The program itself is based on knowledge of the best of parenting research in addition to newer psychological research on the science of compassion, attachment, and cognitive schemas. The greatest gift to give your child is your presence.
Facilitator’s Bio: Sally McMahon – Having completed a degree in Psychology, Sally went on to do a Masters in Child Development in University College London. During this Masters she had the opportunity to do her research on the .b programme (mindfulness in schools), which led her to begin a masters in Mindfulness-Based Interventions in University College Dublin. Throughout this masters she had numerous opportunities to lead meditations, while strengthening her own meditation practice. Sally completed her 500hr Yoga Teacher Training in Dublin and India. She has created mindfulness and yoga classes ‘Tiny Toes, Beautiful Souls’ for children aged 3-12 and has been teaching both children and adults in Dublin, Barbados and her new home Vancouver. She has also facilitated courses in general mindfulness, mindfulness-based stress reduction and mindful parenting, and delivered workshops in corporate environments and classes in schools (ages 3-15). Her knowledge of, and passion for mindfulness and yoga has grown over the past few years and she is driven to enlighten others with this knowledge. She feels that the greatest gift you could ever give a child is teaching them how to be truly happy no matter what they are faced with throughout their lives. Planting the seeds at an early age so they can blossom into confident, kind and compassionate souls.
