The Program

Vision: A student who graduates from the program will be qualified to teach a comprehensive, safe, hatha yoga class and will have improved their understanding of yoga, teaching techniques, business opportunities, and one’s direction in life.

They will be equipped to teach a comprehensive, safe yoga class that nurtures and supports physical, emotional, and spiritual growth.

Students will spend approximately 100 hours of the training learning the foundations of teaching hatha yoga. Although there are many hatha yoga postures, each of the postures were chosen specifically to illustrate principles of teaching that can then be applied to any posture. By the end of the course, a student will be able with any posture to:

  • Understand the Safety considerations
  • Know how to teach the posture verbally, visually and kinesthetically
  • Be able to accommodate students of all levels through modifications and variations

Be able to describe to students the physical, emotional and energetic benefits

Approximately 20 hours will be spent on learning and practicing teaching techniques that “make a good yoga teacher” great. They include the following:

  • Instruction based on incorporating visual, auditory, and kinesthetic cues to allow a teacher to reach students who learn through different modalities
  • Visually through Demonstrations – either the teacher themselves or through a powerful technique known as the ‘Silent Demo’, Mirroring, showing Misalignments,
  • Kinesthetically through Assists – in program training using press points, practicing in partners, by apprenticing in actual yoga teachers classes,
  • Teaching the students the importance of breath through understanding Breathing Priniciples, and then how to guide students ‘to breathe’ by learning numerous Breathing Techniques
  • Auditory through practicing Vocal Variety, Body Awareness techniques,
  • How to encourage and inspire students to their practice through Praise
  • How to connect large or small classes through Partner Work

“The universe inside is as large as the universe outside”.

The 20 hours suggested by Yoga Alliance is an introduction to the muscular, skeletal, respiratory, digestive, nervous, endocrine, cardiovascular, and lymphatic systems, and how yoga benefits each system. Taught by a ‘master teacher’ who incorporates the physical (she is a Registered Massage Therapist), with the spiritual, she leaves each student with ‘keys’ to help others. Chakras and how they relate to the postures covered will also be introduced.

In this section, we will discuss the History of Yoga, an overview of the Bhagavad Gita, the Yoga Sutras, and the 8-limbed path of yoga.

  • Yamas and Niyamas and how they pertain to the teachings
  • Discussion of Ethics and a look inward at one’s own beliefs and philosophy make this section practical and relevant
  • Balanced Lifestyle exercises. “the most important part of the course…”.

Learn practical business & life skills from 2 teachers who opened a successful yoga studio immediately after graduation.

Includes Basic principles of the business of yoga, Creating an action plan that leaves a student prepared for immediate action following graduation.

  • Introduction to Meditation and different techniques, ‘the reason Hatha Yoga was invented’ Students are encouraged to continue their own yoga practice as there is limited time for practice during the course although a very important Posture Assessment at the start and end of the course.
  • Guests who will teach and inspire their particular passion, may or may not include Ayurveda, Laughter Yoga, Kids Yoga, Yin Yoga, Power Yoga, Prenatal Yoga, Kundalini Yoga

Frequently Asked Questions

Under our requirement with Yoga Alliance you cannot miss more than 2 classes. If you do miss more than 2, we have homework / assisting programs that will make up for the missed classes. We request that you pick up material you miss from your classmates and bring yourself up to date in order to keep up in the course. If you know ahead of time what class you will miss will make it easier for you to make up the time. If you know ahead of time you will be missing more than 2 classes you may decide to wait til a future program. You can also make up missed classes in a subsequent program.

We look at all areas of an applicant’s life to decide on whether they are suitable or not. Your yoga experience as well as your work and school background is very important to decide whether you have the qualities to becoming a yoga teacher. What we do ask is that you have a minimum of 1 year hatha yoga program before you take the course

A $100 deposit (which goes towards your tuition) confirms your place in the program. Half the balance needs to be paid one month previous to the start of the program. Along with the other half in either post-dated cheques or credit card. You receive a free one-year unlimited pass at the studio if you are one of the first 10 to sign up. You receive a ten-session pass for every month in advance that you sign up if you are not one of the first 10.

You are certified as a Hatha Yoga Instructor. Most studios will recognize your certificate. Bikram and possibly some other specialized styles will not as they are under legal restrictions to only hire teachers from Bikram’s programs.

This depends on the individual and their threshold. It is important to keep your work in balance as this will reflect in your classes. Average of 10 classes/week is a healthy amount.

  • Classes at a gym/community centre average $20-$30/class.
  • Classes at a yoga studio average $40-$70/class.
  • Corporate classes average $40-$60/class.
  • Some studios pay based on the number of students in your class—the more students you have, the higher your pay.

It is always beneficial to have a niche or specialty. It makes you more marketable as a teacher. Whether a market is flooded or not, the key is that people are always looking for great teachers. This applies to any industry. If you are good at what you do, you will get a job.

The program is limited to 20, though the last few we have had about 10 students/ program, so it shouldn’t be too crowded, and you receive plenty of individual attention from the instructors of the program.

You can pay in full or pay half by 1 month before the start date, and then make 6 monthly payments during the program.

The Oct (Sunday)  program is at our Main & 14th location but the Jan (Saturday program) will be somewhere around the 4 locations

There are a team of teachers listed under the faculty above, although how much and how often they teach depends on their individual schedules, as with any program, some may be teaching more/less.   Usually, one teacher will teach a morning/afternoon section, though some teachers e.g philosophy will only come in for part of the afternoon.
