Vision of Open Door Yoga

We are One

When we change ourselves, we change the world

A Place to experience peace, compassion, healing, and growth.

A Place to find balance, to teach and to learn,

A Place to practice Yoga

We are here to be of Service

We see Open Door Yoga as a studio

  • where teachers teach a safe hatha yoga class w/ modifications to accomodate students of all ages, experience, and fitness levels,
  • where teachers are encouraged to learn and teach what they love
  • where the teachers are co-owners and share in the profits of the studio
  • where the class maximum of 30 and teachers helping the students sign up/answer questions/renew passes nurtures the student-teacher bond, the teacher’s sense of co-ownership
  • where every individual is treated with respect, courtesy and dignity and their input & feedback is welcomed and encouraged.
  • where we encourage people to speak to each other directly but that they can speak to Human Resources if they are unable to

History of Open Door Yoga

Open Door Yoga was started in Jan. 1999 as a drop-in yoga class. In Sept. of 1999, the school changed to offering a variety of passes to accommodate the growing student population. Classes were hatha style classes, linking asanas in a flow-like sequence with emphasis on breathing and alignment.

It continues to offer mostly hatha and power classes instead of classifying them into other classifications to provide more options for the students (and to make it easier for classes to be filled when teachers are away). Teachers at the centre are encouraged to incorporate elements of their learnings, in their uniquely individual classes. In this way, students would be exposed to a variety of teachings without having to visit many different schools.

Although a new schedule changes every 3 months (Jan, Apr, July, Oct), we change mostly to accommodate teachers who go away, attend trainings etc.. believing that students and teachers thrive with consistency. We believe that when a new teacher joins the ‘Open Door family’, they are treated and expected to treat others the same way they would like to be treated.

Currently, Open Door Yoga has expanded to include a 200hr Yoga Teacher Training, 4 yoga studio locations, and see future expansion of Open Door through either franchising/mentoring ‘new studio owners’.

Welcome to the family, welcome to our vision

On behalf of all the Open Door Yoga teachers, we would like to thank you for allowing us to teach you what we love. That as we just concluded our semi-annual teachers meeting in August, we all wanted to share our deep appreciation for your support whether it has been staying with us for the past 17 years, returning whenever you could or even having just joined the studio and our community.

For truly , we only exist because each of everyone of you has made a commitment to your yoga, your health, your-Self. So as we head into our 16th year, we wanted to share a message of support, the encouragement to help you stay committed for we know that the most difficult part of this practice isn’t ‘on the mat’ but the journey to ‘get on the mat’.

Some of you know we have created the Free Month Program (click here for more info), an extension/cancellation/transfer policy (click here), offer discounts on the Yoga teacher training program, variety of workshops, even keep our prices as affordable as possible to help as many of you with your yoga practice. That this year, you will hear us offer tips on how to help you with a home practice, be it a pose, a few minutes, an entire sequence or even just reminding you to ‘be aware, be mindful, be present’…..so you can bring your yoga ‘off the mat’.

For if the vision we all share at Open Door Yoga is to create more peace, compassion, balance, healing and growth, we also know that it comes not when the world changes, but when we each individually change. So let us this coming year work together towards this collectively for the truth also is that….We are One.

Style of Yoga taught…

We teach a hatha style yoga, linking asanas with breath and mindful awareness. With particular attention to safety, we offer all-levels class by offering modifications and variations throughout the class. Our teachers were influenced by Kripalu and Sivananda although elements of various teachers and teachings have been incorporated into our classes. Pranayama is incorporated in a typical 75-90 minute class, as are postures which are linked in a “flow-like” style. Meditation is often included and shavasana (10-15 minutes) always at the end of each class. As with all yoga, the best way to know is to come experience some of our classes.
